Big Game Hunting Spain and Real Estate

Unexplored Spain

An approach to Culture with Locals

British Abel Chapman (1851-1929) and Walter J. Buck (1843-1917) wrote classic chapters on the Spanish Ibex (Wild Spain, 1893 and Unexplored Spain, 1910). In 1901, Chapman tried to hunt the isolated wild male ibex of the wilder Sierra Madrona, precisely the area you will visit. Both men were hunter-naturalists who also were leading conservation figures of the era, working for the protection of threatened species such as the Sierra Madrona Ibex. Today area landowners continue to protect the land and its wildlife, organizing to preserve nature and the traditions of the Madrona Mountain Range by creating a
180,000-plus acre area called the Four Rivers Mountain Range (4RMR).

Four Rivers Mountain Range is a Voluntary Action Group comprised of inhabitants and landowners who are all nonprofit conservationists. They have joined together to preserve the territory and its natural values to maintain and promote its contribution to the world's biodiversity, fostering knowledge, appreciation and respect of the habitat and the inhabitants who made it possible. Special attention has been given to the protection of the Madrona Ibex.

The area already has received national and international recognition in the nature preservation arena as part of the European Red Natura 2000, Bird´s Special Protection Area (ZEPA), Place of Interest for the CEE(LIC) and Special Protection Area for some endangered especies Iberian Imperial Eagle, Fasciata Eagle, Black Vulture, Black Stork, Bats and Iberian Lynx. Recently the area was recognized as an important part of the Alcudia and Sierra Madrona Natural Park.

Within 4RMR are landowners who consider hunting as one of the best means to preserve nature while maintaining a healthy renewable economy for land inhabitants. They have created the working group Madrona Landowners United, which will have the pleasure of introducing you to the Unexplored Spain described by Chapman and Buck.

As is written in the famous book’s Introduction, “The Spain that we love and of which we write is not the Spain of tourist or globe-trotter.” We at MLU represent a centuries-old heritage of living off the land.

Los Claros (www.losclaros.net) and Valmayor (www.valmayor.eu) are the tip of the iceberg. Due to having close contact with those in the field, including 4RMR’s local members, you will have the opportunity to visit unexplored areas of Spain—both in land and history.

Members’ land holdings span 40,000-plus acres, accounting for the largest private hunting area in Spain.

What Makes MadronaLU Different

It is easy to book a hunt in Spain but if you want more than just a hunt, Madrona Landowners United offers the ultimate adventure. Why? Because you hunt with the landowners themselves, who live amongst the wild game and whose families have managed the land for generations. Many Spanish big-game hunts are booked on national parkland where the outfitter pays a fee to the government or the landowner to take you hunting. Madrona Landowners United is unique because the landowners serve as your personal guides as you tap into their knowledge of the game animals and terrain.

Madrona Landowners United offers multiple hunt packages but is known for letting you create your own. Packages can include hunting for mature, trophy-class Iberian red deer and mouflon sheep, a chance at a Madrona ibex, on the verge of being recognized as a new Spanish ibex sub-species (adding to the four that currently make up the Spanish Grand Slam), or a giant wild boa standing three feet at the shoulder.

Select from three hunting methods-or do them all. Enjoy spot-and-stalk trophy or management hunts with your bow or rifle as you navigate Mediterranean forests and move through meadows using oak trees and remnants of centuries-old walls and structures. Or climb into a stand overlooking the vast countryside, complete with a mountain view, in anticipation of big-game animals coming to you. Or take part in a centuriesold Monteria (driven hunt). Even if you have experienced a driven hunt, few have done so on sections of land spanning 1,300-plus acres with 300 dogs.

From Pre-Medieval Times to Don Quixote and Beyond

Don’t travel all the way to Spain without enjoying some sight-seeing, even if it’s just day trips for you or some of yourtravel companions. The country has much to offer, and Madrona Landowners United helps you explore it. In addition to helping you put together a hunt package catering to your interests and budget, no one knows the tourist destinations, history and culture b etter than those who actually live there.

Explore Centuries-old cities and towns from Madrid and Segovia -the medieval city that still has a wall around it- to Toledo, the famous Cordoba of bullfighting fame, Sevilla and more as you step back as far as the year 70, not 1370 or even 1570 -though you will do that, too. Visit the home of Miguel de Cervantes, who in the 1500s wrote Don Quixote- dubbed “the world’s first modern novel”-second only to the Bible in the number of languages in which it has been translated.

The wealth of historical and religious landmarks and museums match the surrounding natural landscape, cuisine, range of accommodations, performances including flamenco shows and other traditions. Experience walking down cobblestone streets so narrow you will wonder how horse-drawn carriages ever fit through them as even small vehicles must pass at a snail’s pace. And as for Segovia alone, did we mention it is nestled in the Roman shadow of the Aquaduct from the year 112 and is one (of many) that has been declared in 1985 a World Heritage City for its monumental abundance?

Meals and Accommodations

As Madrona Landowners United brings you from the fields to the dinner table, there are more surprises in store. The dining experience offers a rich portrait of the people who prepare your meals. As you sip a glass of locally produced wine and sample dishes with flavors you just cannot shake, you realize the food captures the spirit of this place as sharply as any photo. While the many pleasures of hunting here are all tied up in the journey, meals are a reminder that sometimes it really is all about the destination.

Here the experience transcends the dinner plate. Depending on your hunt location, accommodations include everything from private rooms in the main house to lodging in comfortable poolside rooms and a bunkhouse. With the mild fall and winter Mediterranean climate, a pool and garden view is just as beautiful in hunting season as in the summer. An onsite chapel, ancient burial ground, Roman mine and centuries-old structures are all part of the semng as you connect with Spanish history and tradition.

Services
